Legacy Award 2024: Austin Ancestral Spacemakers!

9pm, Friday, February 16th, 2024
@ Cheer Up Charlie’s

For OUTsider 2024 we’re bringing the Legacy Award HOME to honor our ANCESTRAL LGBTQ+ SPACEMAKERS!

Without fabulous spacemakers like these, Austin would be a MUCH less colorful and queerdo space!

Collectively they have forged havens for subsequent LGBTQ+ generations to live, love, learn, dream and gayyyyyy it up!

Time for us to pay our RESPECTS to these Ancestral LGBTQ+ Spacemakers!

Priscilla A. Hale (top left), Chale Nafus (top right), Sandra Martínzez (bottom left), Susan Post (bottom right)

Join us for an evening of intergenerational celebration and commemoration of:

  • Priscilla A. Hale

Extraordinary longtime Executive Director of allgo, a TX statewide queer people of color org.

Priscilla is a galvanizing champion of community building/expression/mobilization and an adored mentor to the many!

  • Sandra Martínzez

Multi-talented legacy leader of such organizations as Project Transitions/Top Drawer Thrift and aGLIFF, owner of beloved queer bar Chances, and a doer and giver with more credits than any one paragraph could ever contain!

  • Chale Nafus

Fabulous founder of the department of Radio-TV-Film at Austin Community College, Director of Programming at Austin Film Society for 13 years, and absolute (and absolutely loved) fixture of the Austin film and arts scenes!

  • Susan Post

The unstoppable Susan Post, whose Bookwoman has kept Austin feminist, queer, and curled up on the couch — immersed in a spectacular story — for more than four decades. A queer Austin legaaaaaaacy that has OUTlasted, staying kickazz and crucial!

To celebrate our OUTstanding ancestral spacemakers, in collaboration with Sappho’s Songs, we’ve assembled an EPIC cavalcade of queerdo brilliance — across generational lines, proving that the paths these ancestors have paved are still blooming with creative badassery.

Lezbian Popcorn Cart

hosted by rachael shannon

The Lezbian Popcorn Cart is a mobile monument to queer hystories.

With a nod to queer cultural corn traditions, Lezbian Popcorn serves fresh-popped bags with a savory blend of anecdotal queer herstory. Conceived in Austin TX, and realized in Baltimore MD as part of the Queerstories collaboration, Lez Pop returns to OUTsider for a second time, this time celebrating decades of queer Austin herstory and OUTsider hirstory, amongst odes to deceased dyke bars across the nation. Come learn a story, share some hearsay, or douse some tasty rumours in a little spray Braggs. We’ll keep the oil sizzling.
