WHAT A WITCH, PART 5: HANSEL AND GRETEL QUEERED (DEVOURING)
Friday (2/17), 3:30pm-6:30pm, The VORTEX (2307 Manor Rd.)
A queer take on Grimms’ famous tale “Hansel and Gretel” in which the fear of being devoured is transformed into the pleasure of eating and being eaten. In a wooded location in Austin, the witch (Kay Turner) and her animal familiars and renegade fairy tale characters (played by twelve local Austin performers and musicians) await festival participants–hansels and gretels–who come in pairs to the witch. They find her seated on a pile of glittering, wrapped candies–an homage to Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s “Untitled” (USA Today), 1990. In a brief ritual, she asks them to eat some candy as she addresses their fears of being devoured–not just by her, but by anything that might consume them. A “revised” version of “Hansel and Gretel” is told. New, queer meanings of the story are revealed.
