LA/ATX Pocket Expo: The New Rules of Flagging

LA/ATX POCKET EXPO: THE NEW RULES OF FLAGGING
Die Kränken featuring Jonesy and Jaime C Knight
Wednesday (2/17), 9:00pm, Salvage Vanguard Theater (2803 Manor Rd.)

LA/ATX Pocket Expo: The New Rules of Flagging is a participatory workshop and video installation. Flagging is a color-coded system of handkerchiefs used among gay male casual sex-seekers or BDSM practitioners. Hankies and their placement indicate preferred sexual fetishes, what kind of sex being sought, and whether someone is a top/dominant or bottom/submissive. The hanky code was widely used in the 1970s by gay and bisexual men, and has grown to include all genders and orientations.

The piece is a series of coded bandanas portraying a variety of contemporary sexual and gender presentations. The hankies address the multi-various and fluid nature of today’s queer sexualities with a focus on what is illicit in a world of acceptance and equality, mainstream co-optation and mass media visibility. Hand designed and screened by the artists, the hankies are used as props to create video portraits of local participants to be screened in a final installation.
