What a Witch, Part 5

WHAT A WITCH, PART 5: HANSEL AND GRETEL QUEERED (DEVOURING)
Kay Turner
Friday (2/17), 3:30pm-6:30pm, The VORTEX (2307 Manor Rd.)

A queer take on Grimms' famous tale "Hansel and Gretel" in which the fear of being devoured is transformed into the pleasure of eating and being eaten. In a wooded location in Austin, the witch (Kay Turner) and her animal familiars and renegade fairy tale characters (played by twelve local Austin performers and musicians) await festival participants--hansels and gretels--who come in pairs to the witch. They find her seated on a pile of glittering, wrapped candies--an homage to Felix Gonzalez-Torres's "Untitled" (USA Today), 1990. In a brief ritual, she asks them to eat some candy as she addresses their fears of being devoured--not just by her, but by anything that might consume them. A "revised" version of "Hansel and Gretel" is told. New, queer meanings of the story are revealed.
